Garrett Morgan is credited with enhancing the light to make it a three way signal. Prior to his invention, the traffic light only had two signals and went from green to red. It is speculated that Garrett witnessed an accident between a horse drawn carriage and a car which gave him this awesome idea. The light that Garrett designed, influenced the light we see everyday on the roads.
Garret was an inventor at heart and responsible for several other well known inventions including the gas mask, a hair refiner cream that we now refer to as a perm and enhancements to the sewing machine.
What an amazing man!
